  Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 28th June
   
  CONGRATULATIONS to the Shannon Rangers under 14 football team on winning the District under 14 county championship final at Austin tack Park, Tralee, on Saturday evening. The team defeated South Kerry by a score of 2–8 to 1–10 in a thrilling final, with the North Kerry side coming back to score two points in the final minutes of the game and snatch a one point victory. This was the first under 14 victory at county level for Shannon Rangers and great credit is due to team trainer John Kennedy and his selectors. Tarbert players on the team were: Shane Enright and Conor Flynn. Also on the panel were: Stephen O’Connor, Seán Holly, Micheál Normoyle and James Wrenn.
   
  ROGATION NIGHT: The blessing of animals, crops and fields is a practice that goes back to the earliest times. On this Wednesday night, June 26, at 8pm holy water will be blessed at a special Mass to be celebrated in the orchard at the back of the Presbytery. Parishioners are asked to bring a bottle with them to the Mass and take home holy water to bless the fields, lawns, animals, crops etc. After the Mass tea will be served in the Presbytery and everyone will be welcome.
   
  WEDDING BELLS: The wedding took place recently in St Mary’s church, Tarbert, of Fiona Costelloe, daughter of Helen and John Costello, Doonard Crescent, Tarbert and Paul Metcalfe, son of Cath and John Metcalfe, West Yorkshire. The ceremony was performed by Very Rev Mossy Brick, PP, Tarbert. Bridesmaids were Andreina Brent and Labina Ratigan. Bestman was Dave Metcalfe and groomsman was John Metcalfe, both brothers of the groom. The couple will reside in Denholme, West Yorkshire.
   
  TARBERT HOUSE . . . on the Leslie estate is now open to visitors and will remain open until the middle of August. Leslie’s Tarbert House has a long history dating back to the 17th century and is well worth a visit.
   
  GAA LOTTO: There was no winner of the €4,400 Jackpot in the Tarbert GAA Lottery draw held at the Swanky Bar on Sunday night. The numbers drawn were 2, 7, 14, 15. Lucky Dip winners of €30 each were: Carol Ann Warilow, Liz Kelly, Kevin Shanley, Tom Hannigan. Bar prizewinners were: Bottle of Whiskey sponsored by The Swanky Bar, John Ryan; €15 each: Seán Fitzmaurice, Des Buckley, Seán Hanrahan. Promoters prize, €15, John Foley. The next Jackpot will be €4,500 and the draw will be at Coolahans Bar on this Sunday night, June 30. All are welcome.
   
  COMPUTER SUMMER CAMP . . . for Primary School pupils will commence at Community IT Access Tarbert, on July 8, 10am to 12 noon, Monday to Friday inclusive. Second week commences July 15, 10am to 12 noon, Monday to Friday. Cost €30 per student. For further information phone 068/36938.
   
  PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS: Well done to the boys and girls from Tarbert National School who competed with success at the finals of the Kerry Primary Schools Sports held in An Ríocht track, Castleisland, on June 15. Among the medal winners were: 3rd, Darragh McDonnell in 1st class girls 60m. 1st, David Culhane in 3rd class boys 80m. 1st, Danny Wrenn in 3rd class boys 200m. 3rd, Sinéad Prendiville in 5th class girls 600m. In the relay events, 4 x 100m, Tarbert 2nd class girls took 1st place while the 4th class girls took 2nd place in their race.
   
  COMMUNITY GAMES: Best of luck to the young athletes from the parish who will be competing in the Kerry Community Games county athletic finals in Tralee this weekend. The competitions will commence at 11am on Saturday in Austin Stack Park.
   
  DEATH: Sympathy of the community is extended to Mr Pat Carey, “St Ita’s”, Church t, Tarbert, on the recent death of his sister, Mrs Mary (Moll) Curtin, Fourhane and Tournageehy, Listowel. A good number of Tarbert people attended at the removal of the remains from Lyons’ Funeral Home to St Mary’s Church, Listowel and again at the burial which took place in Listowel old cemetery.
   
  CANCER RESEARCH AWARD: Congratulations to Patrick Kiely, son of Anne and Pat Kiely, Tieraclea, Tarbert, who was awarded a gold medal in Excellence by University College Cork for his work in Cancer Research. UNDER 14 FINAL: Best of luck to our under 14 football team who play Beale in the North Kerry League Div 2 final on this Wednesday night, June 26, at 7.30pm in Shannon Park, Tarbert.
   
  WELCOME HOME . . . to Tarbert’s well known footballer, John O’Connell, who has been in Australia for the past 18 months. John’s return will be a big asset to the senior team who are badly hit at the present time with injuries and players gone working to the USA for the summer.
   
  JUNIOR TEAM: Tarbert and Ballydonoghue junior teams played a draw in their Co League game in Shannon Park on Friday evening. Tarbert play Clounmacon in the next round in Shannon Park on this Friday evening at 8pm.
   
  UNDER 12 TEAM: On Sunday evening in Shannon Park the under 12 football team lost to Dromid Pearses in the first round of the County Bórd na nÓg competition. The team have an away game on this Sunday.
   
  UNDER 16 TEAM: Tarbert under 16 team were beaten by a much stronger Scartaglin team in the County Bórd na nÓg game played in Shannon Park on Monday evening. The team are away to Duagh on next Monday, July 1. The game will be played in Lyreacrompane at 7.30pm.
