Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 28th August

IT WAS WITH SADNESS  and deep regret the news was received in the parish of the death of Jimmy Carmody (ex Garda Siochana) Chapel St, Tarbert, which took place on Sunday, August 17 at the home of his brother, Michael and sister in law, Nuala Carmody, after an illness bone with dignity and courage these past months. During his illness he was blessed to have the tender care of Michael and Nuala, and their family in their home, where Jimmy was born 69 years ago.
He was an esteemed member of a popular and widely connected local family, and was well known throughout N Kerry. He was a member of the Garda Siochana for a good number of years, serving in Co Galway for 13 years. Jimmy, who lived in the Market Road took care of his own mother, Ellen (nee Stack) for a number of years before her death. He was a most popular member of our community, and will be sadly missed from around the town, especially by his neighbours in Chapel St, which whom he loved to visit and have a chat. He was a staunch GAA man and had a great knowledge of the game.
He was an outstanding footballer in his day and wore the green and gold with the Kerry minors in 1952, and was a member of the Tarbert minor team who won the N Kerry c’ship that year. Last February at the Tarbert GAA social that minor team were honoured and Jimmy was in the best of health. He was so proud of the plaque he received on the night and said it was a wonderful idea by the Tarbert GAA club to honour the team, and also to have the opportunity to meet so many of the players he played with 50 years ago. Little did anyone think, that six months later, Jimmy would be gone to his eternal reward. He also enjoyed a flutter on the horses, and was well known by many owners and trainers at Irish race meetings. There was a huge attendance at the removal of his remains from St Marys Funeral Home, to St Marys Church. The remains draped with the green and gold and red and black jerseys were shouldered by family members to the Church. GAA supporters past and present formed a guard of honour, all along the route to the Church.
The funeral mass was concelebrated by Very Rev Mossy Brick, PP, Tarbert, along with Fr John O’Connor, Fr John Shine, Fr Martin Buckley, Fr Stephen Kennelly and Fr Philip O’Connell, a former neighbour and school class mate of Jimmy. The funeral was to Lislaughtin Abbey, and the remains were shouldered from the Church to the entrance to Shannon Park by friends and GAA members, who also provided a guard of honour. Fr John Shine and Fr Philip O’Connell said the prayers at the graveside, and after the burial an oration was given by Kieran Walsh, on behalf of the Tarbert GAA club.
Jimmy was predeceased by his sisters Nellie and Delia and is survived by his brothers Pat Joe (Borrisokane, Co Tipperary), Joe (Limerick), Michael (Tarbert), Andy (New York), sisters Mrs Evelyn Keating (Limerick), and Mrs Sheila O’Connor (Tarbert), sisters in law, brothers in law, nephews, nieces, numerous relatives and friends, to whom sympathy is extended. Family members, relatives and friends of Jimmy travelled from many parts for the funeral.

CROKE PARK : For the many Tarbert and Kerry GAA supporters who travelled to Croke Park, on Sunday, it was one of their worst days in years, with defeats for the Kerry minor and senior teams. Kerry’s great tradition of winning in Croke Park has certainly gone, as this was the senior teams 3rd defeat in succession, in Croke. Many supporters felt that the senior team lacked motivation and the spirit to win on Sunday, as the team are certainly far better than the performance they gave in Croke Park on Sunday.

ROSES IN TARBERT: It was another first for Tarbert last Friday, when the 26 roses en route to Tralee for the International Rose of Tralee contest made two stops in Tarbert. They were warmly welcomed at Kirbys Lanterns Hotel, where they had lunch in Parsons Restaurant, with a number of invited guests in attendance. The 2nd stop was the Bridewell, where they were taken on a tour of the Bridewell and afterwards as refreshments were being served, they met and chatted with the big crowd present, to greet them. Entertainment for the roses was provided by musicians Dony Lyons, and Thomas Dillane, with Mary Wren on the bodhran. The roses were escorted into Tarbert by two police jeeps with sirens blaring.
