PRIDE of place in the parish this week must go to the Prendiville sisters
from Pulleen following their great achievement at the National U–14 — U–19
juvenile finals held in Tullamore last weekend.
In the girls U–14, 2000m walk, Sorcha Prendiville won the gold and her twin
sister Sinéad came 2nd to take the silver medals.
In the girls U–16, 2000m walk, Aoibheann Prendiville took first place to win
the gold medal.
Congratulations and well done to the young athletes who are members of
Listowel AC and daughters of Sarah and Thomas Prendiville, who play a big
part in their success.
On the previous weekend at Waterford Crystal Dublin International Grand
Prix, Sorcha Prendiville won a bronze medal in the U–15, 2km walk in an
excellent time of 9.41 minutes. In the same race, her sister Sinéad finished
in 6th place. Also competing with distinction in the International walks
were Julie Prendiville in the U–13 section and Aoibheann Prendiville in the
U–17 event.
ESTUARY AC: Congratulations to the Estuary AC girls U–10 relay team who won
the gold medals for the second year in succession in the 4 x 50m relay at
the National finals held in Tullamore. The team was: Tara Finucane, Eadaoin
Wall (Tarbert), Stephanie Collins, Dara McDonnell (Tarbert). Róisín
Considine (Tarbert) was the team sub.
SHANNON RANGERS: At Shannon Park, Tarbert, on Sunday evening, Shannon
Rangers restored some pride to North Kerry football after their gallant
display against a Laune Rangers side that included Kerry senior players,
Mike Frank Russell, John Sheehan and Liam Hassett, who had an outstanding
game. Laune Rangers won by a score of 0–10 to 0–8, having led at half–time
by 0–4 to 0–3. Had Shannon Rangers’ forwards taken their scoring chances
especially in the first half the result could have been different.
The Tarbert players on the team, all of whom played their part, were: Stevie
Deenihan, Jonathan Wrenn, Darragh Lanigan, Eoin O’Connell and Deo O’Connor,
who did a good job of marking Mike Frank. A big loss to the team were Shaun
McGinley and Donnacha Enright, who were out through injury.
The Tarbert pitch was in excellent condition for the game despite the heavy
downpours during the day and during the game.
DUBLIN DEATH: It was with regret that the people of the parish learned of
the death of Mr Vincent Farrington, Ranelagh, Dublin, which took place at
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospice, Harolds Cross, on July 16. He was husband of
Margaret (nee Phelan), formerly of Tarbert, niece of the late Dr Thomas
McGreevey. The deceased who was a man of a kind and friendly nature, was
well known in Tarbert where he came on regular visits every year with his
wife Margaret, to their residence in the Glin Road. A number of Tarbert
people living in Dublin and other parts attended the funeral on both days.
Also attending the funeral from Tarbert was Mrs Maisie O’Connor, Dooncaha,
who is a cousin of Mrs Farrington. Mrs O’Connor, who is in her early 90s,
travelled to Dublin with her daughter, Mrs Mary Carmody. Vincent Farrington
is survived by his wife Margaret, children, Cliona, Réiltin, Pádraic and
Aisling, grandchildren, sister–in–law, Mrs Elizabeth Ryan, numerous
relatives and friends to whom sympathy of the community is extended.
LANTERNS HOTEL: A céad míle fáilte is extended to Bill Kirby and his
daughter Marie, to the Lanterns Hotel, Tarbert. Bill Kirby of the well known
Kirbys Brogue Inn, Tralee, is the new owner of the Lanterns Hotel, Coast
Road, Tarbert, and has taken over the business since early July. The hotel,
formerly owned by Maureen and the late Maurice Fitzgerald, will now be known
as “Kirbys Lantern Hotel.” Best of luck to the Kirbys in this new extension
to their business.
On behalf of the community the writer wishes Maureen Fitzgerald and her
family good luck and every success in the years ahead.
BRENDAN KENNELLY FESTIVAL: The annual Brendan Kennelly Summer Festival will
be held in Ballylongford from August 7 to 11.
GAA LOTTO: There was no winner of the €3,200 Jackpot in the GAA Lottery draw
held at Carmodys Bar on Friday night. The numbers drawn were: 4, 10, 26, 27.
Lucky Dip winners of €30 each were: Kieran and Stevie Deenihan, Patrick
Lynch, Paul Ruttle, Gerald O’Sullivan. Bar prizewinners were: Johnny Wrenn,
€40 in the envelope draw; €20 each to: Noreen Carrig, Winnie Carrig, Joan
Brennan. Promoters prize of €20: Barrons Supermarket. The top prize now in
the envelope draw is €450. Only the people attending at the draw have the
opportunity of being included in the envelope draw and the bar prizes.
The next Jackpot will be €3,300 and the draw will be held at the Anchor Bar
on this Friday night. All are welcome.
SOCCER LOTTO: The results of the Ferry Rangers Lotto draw, with a Jackpot of
€3,700 held at Savages Bar on July 15 are as follows: numbers drawn were: 6,
14, 20, 22. There was no Jackpot winner. Luck Dips of €30 each were: JP
Swanky, Eileen Cronin, Maureen Lynch, Maureen Enright, Daniel F Kiely.
Promoters Prize of €15 was won by: Jerry Savage. Bottle of Whiskey: Andrew
Flavin. Mugs game, €50: E Mulcaire.
Soccer Blitz at Kirbys Lanterns Hotel on Friday, July 25, for registration
of U–10s and U–12s for the next season, between 7–9pm. New members require
birth certs on the night. Cost €10 including insurance and registration fee.
GAA NEWS: At the monthly meeting of the Tarbert GAA club a vote of sympathy
was passed to the wife and family of the late Mike Healy, Tieraclea,
Tarbert; to the parents and family of the late Pat McCrohan, Tralee and to
the wife and family of the late Paddy Carrig, Borrigone, Askeaton.
The Club wishes a speedy recovery to the four prominent Tarbert footballers
who are on the injured list at the present time. They are: Shane and Micheál
Sheehan, Donnacha Enright and Shaun McGinley, who got injured with the Kerry
junior team in the Munster final against Cork. Congratulations to Shaun on
winning a Munster junior medal.
SET CÉILÍ: A Set Céilí will be held in the Community Hall, Tournafulla, on
this Friday, July 25. Music by Swallows Tail Céilí Band. Dancing:
10pm–1.30am.
SYMPATHY: Sympathy of the community is extended to Mary Bridgeman, Woodview
Place, Tarbert, on the death last week of her mother, Mrs Julia Walsh,
Clonprohus, Moyvane. A big number of Tarbert people were among the large
attendance at the removal of the remains to the Church of the Immaculate
Conception, Moyvane and at the funeral Mass and burial which took place in
Murhur cemetery, Moyvane.

COMMEMORATION: On Sunday at 2.30pm, in the village, of Blennerville,
outside Tralee, Moyvane man, Gabriel Fitzmaurice will launch the latest
book by local historian, Padraig O Concubhair, principal teacher of
Lenamore NS. The book A Visionary Enthusiast tells the
story of Robert Emmet, and his Kerry connections, and commemorates
the great Irish Patriot, the bi centenary of whose death occurs this
year. Copies can be obtained at the Tarbert Bridewell, priced at €
6.75. |

who died on Thursday at Cork Univ Hospital, there was no GAA lotto
draw, held at Carmodys Bar on Friday night. Also called off was the
Tarbert v Knocknagoshel game in the N Kerry Div 2 league semi final,
fixed for Ballylongford on Saturday night last. |

SHANNON RANGERS: A number of Tarbert
players, will be on the Shannon Rangers senior team, who are fixed
to play Laune Rangers in the Co FC on this Sunday evening at 7pm.
The game will be played either in Ballylongford or Tarbert, with the
winners going through to the quarter finals. Shannon Rangers u21 team
scored a good victory over a fancied E Kerry side, in the first round
of the Co cship. Shannon Rangers won by a score of 1-13 to 1-8.
Tarbert players on the team were Patsy OConnell, Kevin Wrenn
and Darragh Lanigan, who scored 1-5. |

SYMPATHY: Of the community is extended to Mr Jimmy
Fitzgerald, St Patricks Terrace, on the death of his mother, Mrs Catherine
(Kit) Fitzgerald (nee Culhane) Marian Place, Glin, after an illness
patiently borne. She was widow of the late Paddy Fitzgerald. Mrs Fitzgerald
who was in her 80s, was blessed to have been cared for in her own
home, for the past nine months, by her son Jimmy and daughter in law,
Eileen.
Down through the years, the deceased lady was a regular visitor to
Tarbert to the homes of her son, Jimmy and Mrs Annie OHanlon,
where she was often entertained with music and song. She was sister
of the late Mrs Mary OConnell, Doonard Lower.
A big number of Tarbert people attended at the removal of the remains,
mass and funeral. The burial took place in Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin,
and in a final tribute at the graveside, her son Jimmy sang Gentle
Mother.
Sympathy is also extended to the other family members, and to her
many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. |

DEATH: In was with deep regret and sadness, his relatives
and friends in Tarbert heard the news of the death of Mr Paddy Carrig,
Barrigone, Askeaton, which took place on July 1 at St Johns Hospital,
Limerick after an illness borne for the past four months. This was
the 3rd bereavement for the Carrig families of W Limerick and Tarbert
in just over four months. Paddys first cousins, John Carrig of Ardagh
died on February 26, and Tommy Carrig of Askeaton died on June 10.
Paddy, who was only 55 was son of the late Jim and Kitt Carrig of
Borrigon and late of Tarbert.
Paddy, who was a skilled tradesman, was well known for his love of
outdoor life and fishing and hunting were his favourite pastimes every
weekend. He was also a skilled footballer in his day, both at Gaelic
and soccer and many of his former team mates joined in the guards
of honour on both days. There was a huge attendance at the removal
of the remains from his residence to Robertstown Church, and again
at the concelebrated mass and burial which took place in Reilig Mhuire,
Askeaton.
Paddy is survived by his wife, Mary, sons Brian and James, sisters
Mary, Kitt, Nora and Bridie, brother Jim, brothers in law, sisters
in law, father in law, nephews, nieces, numerous cousins, relatives
and friends, and aunt in law, Mrs Rose Carrig, Tarbert, to whom sympathy
of the community is extended. |
