Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 10th July

AN AIR OF GLOOM AND SADNESS hangs over Tarbert and the ESB Power Station in Tarbert Island since Thursday afternoon following the horrific tragedy that occurred in the switch gear room of the Power Station, when three staff members met the full force of an electrical explosion. The three staff members were electrician, Pat McCrohan; electrical supervisor, Mike Healy and engineer, Dermot Thornton. Many parishioners knew that something very serious had happened as the fire engines and ambulance with full sirens on travelled at high speed to the Power Station on Thursday.
On Friday the sad news was received that Pat McCrohan aged 38 years from Doon, Tralee, died in the Specialist Burns Unit at Cork University Hospital. At the time of writing these notes Mike Healy from Tarbert lies critical in the hospital suffering from third degree burns. The third man injured in the fire, Dermot Thornton from Corbally, County Limerick is in a stable condition at the University Hospital. It was a traumatic time on Friday in the Station Canteen when Fr Mossy Brick, PP, celebrated Mass with the station staff to pray for their dead and injured colleagues and their families.
ESB management and staff and retired staff from Tarbert Island and from Dublin and many parts of the country were among the huge crowds who attended the removal of the remains of Pat McCrohan from Gleasures Funeral Home, Tralee on Sunday evening to St Brendan’s Church, Tralee. The burial took place on Monday in Kyrie Elison, Abbey, Abbeydorney following the concelebrated funeral Mass with an overflowing congregation present. The late Pat McCrohan was an esteemed and popular member of the staff in Tarbert Power Station, where he had worked for the past 18 years, having joined the ESB as an apprentice in 1981. He was a conscientious and dedicated member of the electrical staff and will be sadly missed by his colleagues.
In a tribute at the funeral Mass, Tom Reidy who worked with Pat, spoke of his good nature and described him as a great friend and said his first concern after the explosion was for his two colleagues. Pat was a member of the Civil Defence in Tralee, who provided a guard of honour at the funeral. He is survived by his parents Eileen and Pat Joe McCrohan, Doon, Tralee, sister Breda, brother Maurice, the staff at Tarbert ESB Station, numerous relatives and friends to whom the heartfelt sympathy of the community is extended.
