Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 26th June

JUNE 2003  will have many happy and lasting memories for many people in Tarbert and Listowel, the host towns for the Jordanian Special Olympic delegation. After months of hard work  in preparation by the two special Olympic committees, they can feel happy with their contribution to the Special Olympic World Summer games. The local Special Olympic committee and
everyone involved in different ways can feel very proud of the tremendous effort they put in to ensure that the Jordanian delegation in Tarbert, enjoyed the very best of Tarbert hospitality.
It was an historic and momentous occasion for the parish to have been selected one of the host town sin Ireland for the 2003 Special Olympics. One of the highlights of the programme to entertain the Jordanian delegation was the celebration concert, held in St Marys Church, Tarbert on Tuesday night. A total of 15 acts were performed on a specially erected stage, commencing
with the local school children, who were excellent, along with singers, dancers, musicians and a magician, all coming from Tarbert, Moyvane and Glin.
The entertainment concluded with songs from the Tarbert Folk Choir and then to everyone’s delight the Jordanian guests went on stage and gave a rendering of songs from their own country.
Fr Mossy Brick, who introduced each performer on stage paid a special thanks to everyone who contributed to the nights entertainment, and to the people who organised the concert of celebration. He also paid thanks to the local Special Olympic committee for their tremendous work, and to the many parishioners who gave a helping hand. Fr Brick wished the Jordanian athletes every success in Dublin ad hoped they would win some medals to take back to Jordan.
Rev Bill Romar of the Church of Ireland, Tarbert, also spoke and said how happy he was to be resent at such a special and historic occasion in the parish, and wished the Jordanian delegation a pleasant stay in Tarbert.
Local committee Chairman, Milo Kelly, thanked everyone for turning out in such huge numbers for the concert, and he paid a special thanks to the host families, where our Jordanian guests were being accommodated. On Wednesday morning, the Jordanian group travelled to Listowel, accompanied by committee members, to witness the arrival of the torch run. A great atmosphere was prevalent in the Square when the torch run arrived. After the speeches and presentations the Jordanian delegation went on stage and delighted the crowd with their dancing and fun.
During their stay in Tarbert the visitors trained in their sports. The table tennis training took place at the Community Centre, the roller skating at the Comprehensive School and the badminton training took place in Moyvane. Among the many activities the visitors really enjoyed meeting the staff and children in all the classes of the NS. They were delighted with the opportunity to stroll in the John F Leslie Woodland walk, and spend time at the Tarbert Bridewell. Coming from such a dry climate, they were very interested in the Shannon Estuary and green river. They travelled to
Ballyloughran Leisure Centre and Ballybunion, where they visited the Sea Rescue Headquarters. A farewell gathering took place in the Community Centre on Thursday night, where each member of the Jordanian guests was presented with a gift. Special presentations were made to the Special Olympic Liaison Officer from Dublin and to the interpreter travelling with the Jordanian
guests. It was a memorable experience for Tarbert and the Jordanian delegation, and it was amid hugs and tears they departed from Tarbert on Friday morning for Dublin.
The red and black was proudly evident as the large early morning farewell parade began from the Community Centre to the Sqaure, led by Breda Warilow and her dancing troop of girls. Also taking part in the parade were children from the NS, the Jordanian visitors, committee members, host families, helpers and supporters. Trish Healy represented us very well as she participated at the opening ceremony in Croke Park. Trish carried the host town banner, leading the Jordanian delegation at the opening parade. The banner was designed and made in Tarbert, and can be seen on display in Coolahans window, Main St.
