- Week Ending 19th June |

THE Tarbert committee for the
Special Olympics are delighted with the wonderful support their
community has given to the Jordanian athletes and their mentors, who
are currently in Tarbert. The streets and many window fronts are
colourfully decked out, with bright paintings and many flags,
Jordanian, Tarbert and Irish. These very special visitors who
arrived on Monday evening have been overwhelmed by the kindness and
support they have received from the people of Tarbert. We wish them
well as they prepare to participate in their various sporting
disciplines at the Special Olympics World games in Dublin next
week. Many Tarbert children and adults will travel to Listowel on
this Wednesday, June 18 to witness and welcome the Olympic Torch, en
route from Athens. Many more Tarbert people plan to travel to Dublin
with our Jordanian guests to the games. The committee would like to
take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers without whom the
host town programme could not have
proceeded.

POETRY OR SPECIAL
OLYMPICS: The following poem has been inspired and
written by Joseph Lyons of Chapel St. It has been displayed at the
Art exhibition in the Community Centre. The art piece is the
combined work of Joseph and his brother, John. John did the
artistic drawings.
“From the banks of the river Jordan, To the
banks of the Shannon, they came due west, to rest, After their
journey, But not in vain, whether they win or lose, a
challenge met is their gain. Whatever your origin or creed, their
shared accomplishment and open hearted welcome is a
spirit pure and freed”.
Other poems by the
talented Joseph Lyons form part of an exhibition currently running
at Siamsa Tire, Tralee. That exhibition is entitles “Imagery and
Enigma” and remains open until June 24.

GOLDEN JUBILARIAN: Congratulations to Fr John P Enright,
Oak Brook, Chicago, on the celebration of the golden jubilee of his
ordination to the priesthood, May 1953-2003. Fr John, whose father
was a native of Tarbert, is son of the late Paddy and Mary Enright,
Chicago and nephew of the late Thady Enright of Tarmons. During
his years in the priesthood, Fr Enright served in various parishes
in Chicago and also spent 12 years in the Missions working in Chile,
Panama and Bolivia. Last weekend, Fr Enright visited the home of
Mary and Joe Langan of Tarmons, as it was his wish to celebrate mass
in his fathers home town on the occasion of his golden
jubilee. On Friday night, he celebrated mass in the Langan home,
which was the home where his father lived before emigrating to
America. Fr Enright also celebrated the vigil mass in St Marys
Church, Tarbert, on Saturday night. Fr Enright visited a number of
homes during his shot visit to Tarbert, and he spoke of the familiar
Tarbert family names well known to his family in Chicago over the
years. They were O’Donnell, McGee and Wrenn families. We wish Fr
Enright many more years of health
and happiness in his priestly service.

GAA NEWS: At Shannon Park on Friday evening, the junior
team scored a good victory over Clounmacon in the Co league. The
sides were level at half time, 0-3 to 0-3. In the 2nd half, Tarbert
ran out comfortable winners, to win by a score of 1-10 to 1-3. On
Saturday evening, in Ballybunion, the Tarbert senior team lost to
Beale in the N Kerry league by a score of 0-7 to 0-5. Despite
missing some key players, this was a poor display by the team, who
lacked the spirit and the will needed to win games. A big loss to
the team in the coming months will be Denis Kiely, who has taken up
employment in Jersey Island. It was good to see Shaun McGinley
back again in the Co colours. Last Sunday in Tralee, Shaun was
brought on in the 2nd
half, with the
Kerry junior team who defeated Tipperary in the Munster semi final
and played very well.
