  Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 26th April
   
  ON MONDAY evening Tarbert Beavers prepared five window boxes of flowers and placed them at the Grotto in preparation for the month of May. Tarbert Development Association covered all the cost incurred. On this Sunday Tarbert Beaver Group will join the Munster Beaver Group outing at Bunratty Castle. All the leaders and children will dress in medieval costume, special thanks to Jane Kiely for making the costumes for the Tarbert group.
   
  TIDY TOWNS: There was a great turn out for the ‘clean up’ in the town on last Wednesday evening. Unfortunately all the work was not completed so a further ‘clean up’ session is planned for this Wednesday, evening April 24 starting from the Bridewell at 6.30pm. A good turn out again of helpers would be greatly appreciated.
   
  SOUP KITCHEN: The soup kitchen held on Good Friday in aid of Listowel Hospice, which was part of the Lenten programme, realised the sum of €1,300. Thanks is due to the ladies and all involved and to the people of the parish for their very generous support.
   
  RADIO MASS: A little bit of history will be created in the parish this weekend when 40 members of the housebound in the parish will have the Vigil Mass on Saturday night and the 11am mass on Sunday broadcast from St Mary’s Church, Tarbert, into their homes on a new set of radios. Committee members distributed the one way radios to householders during the week and gave instructions on how to use them.
   
  COMMUNITY MEETING: Following the recent spate of ‘break ins’ in the district, Sergeant Brian Fitzgerald will meet members of the local community in the Community Centre tonight Wednesday April 24 at 8pm. It is important that there will be a big attendance at this meeting.
   
  GAA LOTTERY: There was no winner of the €3,600 jackpot in the GAA lottery draw held at the swanky bar on Sunday night. The numbers drawn were 1, 19, 21, 23. Luck dip winners of €30 each were Donal Finucane, Rosa Bambury, L Barrett, Pat Fitzgerald. Bar prize winner were bottle of whiskey sponsored by the Swanky Bar Geraldine Flavin, €15 each to Linda O’Mahony, Mike Gregan, promoters prize €15 John Foley. The next jackpot will be €3,700 and the draw will be held at Coolahans Bar on this Sunday night. All are welcome.
   
  COPPER HUNT: The Tarbert National School Copper hunt campaign for Bothar na nGabhar again exceeded all expectations with a total of €723.94 collected. This money will be sufficient for Bohar to send two goats and a trio of rabbits to an African family. Sincere thanks is due to all the adults and children in our community who collected and contributed so generously to the campaign.
   
  MEDALS PRESENTATION: Members of the Tarbert junior football team who won the Murphy Cup will be presented with their medals at Coolahans Bar on this Saturday night at 10.30pm. The team defeated Beale in the final.
   
  NK LEAGUE: Tarbert senior team are fixed to play Knocknagoshel in the North Kerry league on this Saturday night at 7.00pm in Shannon Park, Tarbert. The junior team scored an easy victory over Ballydonoghue in the North Kerry league game played in Shannon Park on Tuesday night.
   
  JUVENILE MEETING: A meeting of the Tarbert juvenile football club will be held in the dressing rooms on this Thursday night April 25 at 9.00pm.
   
  GARY DOHERTY: His relatives and supporters in the district were delighted on Wednesday night when Gary Doherty scored the winning goal for the Republic of Ireland soccer team in the friendly International against the USA played in Landsdowne road, Dublin. Gary, whose mother, May is a native of Ballybunion, is nephew of Tommy and Dominic Quane, Central Garage, Tarbert and well known Motor Dealers also of Ballybunion.
   
  U14 TEAM: Following their victory on Monday evening over Austin Stacks ‘B’ at Shannon park, Tarbert U14 team have qualified for the semi final of the county board na nog competition. The following was the panel of players M Normoyle, S holly, K Shanley, N O’Connor, S Mullane, N Kelliher, S Enright, C Flynn, S O’Connor, J Wren, J Enright, K Enright, E Mulcahy, I Healy, K Lehane, G O’Connell, A Sweeney.
   
  SYMPATHY of the community is extended to the Shanahan family of Kilbaha, Moyvane on their sad bereavement in the death of John Shanahan which took place at cork university Hospital on April 17. John, who was only in his early thirties, was son of Patrick Shanahan and Kathleen Shanahan (nee Egan) formerly of Tarmons, Tarbert. A big number of Tarbert people attended at the removal of the remains from Lyons Funeral Home to the church of the Assumption, Moyvane and again at the funeral mass and burial in the new cemetery, Gale Bridge, Moyvane.
   
  DISCO: St Joseph’s Secondary School Fund–Raising Disco, on Friday, May 3, 9pm to 12 midnight, at Sally’s Nightclub, Cliff House, Ballybunion. Admission: €6. All Secondary School students welcome.
