Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 24th April

GAA:  Easter Sunday night at the Lanterns Hotel was very special and a memorable night for Tarbert GAA with a busy schedule of events taking place which included the GAA Forum; the launching of the Club's centenary; a sponsorship by Bupa Ireland and the GAA lottery draw with a jackpot of € 8500. Highlight of the night was the open forum and discussion on GAA affairs with eight distinguished panel members taking questions from the floor and each one giving his address on the different topics up for discussion. Among the main topics discussed were: Opening up of Croke Park; Hurling in Kerry; Role of the Gaelic Players Association; Alcohol sponsorship in the GAA; Underage coaching in Clubs and schools; Kerry¹s chances in the football championship; North Kerry¹s poor record in the county championship.
County Board chairman, Seán Walsh, complimented the club on holding such a forum and their vision to have such an excellent and experienced group of GAA personalities attending at the forum. Pauric McMenamin, chairman of Kilmacud Crokes Club in Dublin gave a brief account of the work and effort it takes to run a GAA Club in Dublin and the importance of coaching at every age level. The other members of the panel, who were all most impressive and speakers of ability on GAA affairs were: Fr Mossy Brick PP, Tarbert; Limerick Football Manager, Liam Kearns; Ex Kerry footballers, Jimmy Deenihan TD; Kerry footballer Liam Hassett; Kerryman Sports Reporter; John O¹Dowd; NK Board chairman, Der O¹Connor. Tarbert GAA chairman, Anthony Stack paid tribute to the members of the panel for the special effort they made to attend the forum. He also thanked Paddy Creedon for all his work in preparation for the forum.
Another important event on the night was the launching of the centenary of the Tarbert GAA Club which takes place in 2004. John McGee and Laura Lavery launched the announcement of 1904-2004. Centenary celebrations will commence on New Yeas Eve. John, who is one of the older generation and a life long supporter of the GAA and Laura, who is a member of the U12 juvenile football team, have chosen the Centenary personalities. Club secretary, Joe Langan, announced that preliminary plans have been drawn up to mark the centenary celebrations with a "Welcome Home Week" planned from August 1, to August 8, 2004. He said it is hoped to get as many people with Tarbert connections to come and visit during the various different planned events.

SPONSORSHIP: Prior the GAA Forum at the Lanterns on Sunday night, Bupa Ireland announced sponsorship of jerseys for the Tarbert team. Bupa Ireland IT Manager in Fermoy, Deo O'Connor, and Lisa Kelly, Customer Service, made the presentation to Club Chairman, Anthony Stack. Anthony thanked Bupa Ireland for their generous sponsorship and wished the Company every success.

CO LEAGUE: In Brosna on Saturday evening our senior team lost to Brosna in the county league game by a score of 1-13 to 0-8. A leg injury to full back, Jonathan Wrenn, early in the game was a big blow to the team, who put in a disappointing performance over the hour.

CONGRATULATIONS: Tarbert GAA Club wish to extend congratulations and every success to Seán Kelly who was installed President of the GAA at the GAA Congress held in Belfast recently. Seán, who is the first Kerryman to hold this prestigious office, regularly attended Tarbert GAA socials during his years as Kerry County Board Chairman.

EASTER: Easter was celebrated with great fervour and holiness in our Parish and it was edifying to see such large congregations at the Masses and all the Easter Ceremonies in St Marys Church. Most impressive on Good Friday were the Processions to the Church from the two sides of the Parish. Leading the processions, holding crosses aloft were Philomena Gildea from the Tarmons side and Mickie Cregan from the lower side of the parish.
Also on Good Friday the Annual Charity soup kitchen in the Community Centre in aid of Listowel Hospice was a huge success as was the sponsored walk also held in aid of Listowel Hospice. The huge congregation at the Childrens Mass on Holy Saturday was a very special occasion for the children and their parents. A sincere word of thanks to Very Rev Mossy Brick PP, who officiated at all the ceremonies.
Also concelebrating at the Masses on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday was Fr Tommy O¹Hanlon, Dooncaha, who was spending his first Easter in his native Tarbert in 34 years. Thanks is also due to the senior choir, the folk group, the Parish Clerk Kevin O'Connell and to the many parishioners who participated in the different ceremonies in the Church.
The Easter period also saw a big number of Tarbert people home from many parts of Ireland and overseas to spend time with their families and friends.

DEVELOPMENT ASSOC: The Duck and Birdhide Project Draw took place recently in Savages Bar. The prizes were vouchers to be used in Tarbert and were designed to support local businesses. They were won by Kieran Walsh, Seán Kelly and Margaret Scannell. A big crowd enjoyed a great night of music and sing song. Thanks to the committee who organised the night and to the many people who supported the draw.

COLLECTION: A Church gate collection will be taken up this weekend in aid of Our Lady¹s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin.

COPPER HUNT: Well done to the pupils of Tarbert National School who raised a total of €780 in their copper hunt campaign held during Lent for Bothar. The money raised will be used to send two dairy goats and three trio of rabbits to poor families in Africa. Thanks is due to the children and everyone in the Community who contributed so generously to the campaign.
