IT
was with deep sadness and regret people of the parish heard of the
news on Friday night of the death of Very Rev Canon Jimmy OConnell,
PP, VF, Killorglin and former Parish Priest of Tarbert. Fr Jimmy as
he was known by the people of Tarbert where he served for almost five
and a half years, died in University Hospital, Cork, on Friday night
after an illness bravely borne
these past few months. A native of Causeway, Fr Jimmy was ordained
in 1967 and then spent three years as Emigrant Chaplain in London.
Following his return to the diocese he was made curate in Killeentierna
where he served until 1973. Fr Jimmy was then appointed School Chaplain
for Castleisland and Assistant Director of Youth.
In 1977 he was appointed Director of Kerry Diocesan Youth Service,
where he served with dedication for 16 years. He was made a curate
in the parish of Ballylongford (Asdee) in 1994 where he served for
18 months before being appointed Parish Priest of Tarbert in September
1995.
During his years in Tarbert he will be specially remembered for the
refurbishment of St Marys Church, which was just completed when
he was transferred to Killorglin in January 2001. He will also be
remembered for his compassion and sympathy for families in times of
bereavement, his great love for the old Christian traditions and his
vision to get so many parishioners exercising different ministries
in the Church.
Fr Jimmy was an inspiration to all who knew him and will be sadly
missed by his family and friends and will be a great loss to the diocese
of Kerry.
Fr Jimmys remains reposed in St James Church, Killorglin,
on Saturday night and after a Prayer Service on Sunday the removal
took place to Caseys Funeral Home, Causeway. The esteem in which
Fr Jimmy was held in Tarbert was reflected in the big numbers of Tarbert
people who were among the huge attendance at the removal of his remains
to St Johns Church, Causeway and
again at the concelebrated funeral Mass and burial in the adjoining
cemetery on Monday.
The chief concelebrant at the Mass was Fr Jimmys cousin, Very
Rev John Lawlor, PP, Ballydonoghue and the homily was delivered by
Very Rev Michael Fleming, PP, Moyvane. The attendance of about 100
clergy included priests from the diocese and friends and classmates
of the deceased and from Tarbert, Fr Mossy Brick, PP; Fr Tommy OHanlon
and Fr Liam Murphy as well as former Tarbert Comprehensive School
Chaplains, Fr Declan OConnor, Fr Pat ODonnell and Fr David
Gunn.
Fr Jimmy is survived by his brother John (Causeway), sisters, Mrs
Angela Davoren (Causeway); Mrs Phyllis Galvin (Ardagh); sisterinlaw,
Norma; brothersinlaw, Michael and Tom; aunt Dora (Leeds),
nephews, nieces, relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. |

for the U10 and U16 teams, both having promising panels
of players. It is now planned to have an additional meeting at a later
date to appoint these positions and parents as well as any interested
