Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 14th February

THE Tarbert GAA annual social held at the Lanterns Hotel on Friday night was once again a great success and a most enjoyable night for the 200 guests who attended. It was also a special night for the members of the 1952 Tarbert minor team who were honoured by the club on the occasion of the golden jubilee of their North Kerry championship victory.
It was truly a memorable event that brought back many happy memories for the players and their family members present and great credit is due to the Tarbert GAA club and the people who were involved in organising this celebration. Special guests on the night were the North Kerry Board President, the legendary Eddie Dowling; North Kerry Board Chairman, Der O’Connor and his wife Mary and Very Rev Mossy Brick, PP, President of the Tarbert GAA club.
After an excellent meal, club Secretary, Joe Langan, who was MC for the night, welcomed everybody to the social and thanked the people of the parish for their great support for the social every year. He said he was happy to see so many members and representatives of the 1952 minor team present and that the club was delighted to honour the team. Club chairman, Anthony Stack, in his address extended a special welcome to the 1952 team and said out of the panel of 20, sadly two had passed to their eternal reward, namely Timothy Mulvihill and Eddie Lanigan. He was happy to see both families so well represented at the social.
The Chairman said he would like to take the opportunity to thank all the people of the parish and outside the parish for their generous and continued support of the GAA lotto throughout the year. He also thanked all the business people from the area who donated the numerous spot prizes for the night and thanked Maureen Fitzgerald of the Lanterns and her staff for the excellent meal and service.
Der O’Connor congratulated the club and the 1952 team for making this year’s GAA social something very special for Tarbert GAA. He said, as a Tarbert person, he saw many of that minor team blossom from minor level to be the backbone of the senior teams of the ’50s and ’60s and also had the pleasure of seeing them play county championship football and some playing with the Kerry minors. Der said with the new commitment from the present senior panel he looked forward to a successful year for the team and their trainer, John Anthony Culhane.
Fr Mossy Brick in his humorous address spoke of the pride of the jersey and said success can only be achieved by the hard work and commitment given to training and the will to win on the day of the game. Eddie Dowling said he was honoured to be invited to the social to make the presentations to the 1952 minor panel. He said 1952 was also a special year for himself as his own team Ballydonoghue, which he was a member of won the North Kerry senior championship.
Michael Lanigan, who was the team captain in 1952 introduced the team panel and gave a brief introduction on each member and their success on the football field. The 12 members of the team panel attending and the representatives of the players not present were presented with beautiful inscribed plaques and a commemorative booklet by invited guest, Eddie Dowling.
The players present were Willie Flynn, Seamus O’Neill, Michael Carmody, Eugene Mulcaire, Jimmy Carmody, Peter Langan, Michael Lanigan (captain), Finbar Carrig, Seán Donovan, Moss Mulvihill, Tim Kiely (New York and Tarbert) and Thomas McCarthy, who travelled from London for the occasion.
The presentations for the following players were accepted as follows — Timothy Mulvihill RIP, by his wife Bridie; Eddie Lanigan RIP, by his wife Teresa’ Francis Kelly (London) by his sister Nuala; Georgie O’Connell (London) by his brother Patsy; Franco Kelly (Galway) by his cousin, Noel Kelly; Eddie Ferris (New York) by his niece, Kay Diggins; Tom Mulcaire by his brother Eugene; Bishop Eddie Carmody (Texas) was also a valid member of the panel and will be presented with his memento at a later date.
Michael Lanigan paid thanks to all the sponsors and advertisers for their generous contributions and thanked the Tarbert GAA club for making this night possible.
The Hall of Fame trophy, sponsored by Michael and Nuala Carmody went to Joe Langan (Town) in recognition of his overall service to the club at every level and in particular for his involvement with the underage teams for the past several years. Joe received a great ovation when he was presented with the trophy by Michael Carmody. A special word of thanks is due to Michael Lanigan for the tremendous work and effort he put in preparing for this golden jubilee celebration.
