TARBERT
lost one of its oldest and most esteemed members of the community
in the death on Thursday, November 28, of Mrs Mary Carmody (nee Stack),
Tarmons House, Tarbert, which took place at the residence of her son,
Dr Pascal Carmody, Killaloe, Co Clare. Aged 91 years, she was mother
of Bishop Eddie
Carmody, Corpus Christi, Texas and of Sr Mary Carmody, Mercy Convent,
Carlow and her death leaves a void in the ranks of the older generation.
Mrs Carmody, who was a native of Beale, Ballybunion, was a member
of a very well known and widely connected family and a mother of 13
children, ten sons and three daughters. The Carmody family lived in
Ahalana, Moyvane, before moving to live in Tarmons in the early 50s.
The deceased lady was a woman of great faith, a caring mother and
her top priorities all her long life was her family and
the home. One of her favourite pastimes was reading and she loved
the regular visits by her neighbours and family members. During her
latter years she was cared for in her home by her son Finbar and daughterinlaw
Ita and was blessed with the company of her grandchildren. Despite
her failing health over the past 12 months, Mrs Carmody had her full
faculties up to the time of her death and even had all her Christmas
cards sent out. For the past two months she was cared for at the home
of her son Pascal and daughterinlaw Frieda in Killaloe.
The throng of mourners who paid their respects when the remains arrived
at St Marys Church, Tarbert, from Killaloe on Friday night and
again at the Mass and funeral on Saturday testified to the high esteem
in which Mrs Carmody and her family were held. The chief celebrant
at the concelebrated funeral Mass was Bishop Eddie Carmody, son of
the deceased lady. The other concelebrants were Very Rev Mossy Brick,
PP, Tarbert; Very Rev Philip OConnor, PP, Ballylongford; Very
Rev Michael Fleming, PP, Moyvane; Fr Bob Malone, Killaloe; Fr Mossy
Dillane, Clonfert; Fr Pat Kelly, Athea; Fr Martin Hegarty, PP, Ballybunion;
Fr John Shine, Kenmare; Fr Ger Aherne, Carlow; Fr John Killeen, Ballinasloe;
Fr Tom Mahon, Knockanure and Fr Bernard OReilly, Dublin. Family
members participate in the readings, prayers of the faithful, the
offertory procession and singing of the hymns. Before the remains
were removed from the church, Mrs Carmodys favourite song, The
Cliffs of Dooneen was sung by Deirdre Carmody. The burial took place
in Kilnaughtin cemetery. Mrs Carmody was predeceased by her husband
Michael, who died 25 years ago and is survived by her ten sons, Bishop
Eddie Carmody (Texas); Dr Michael Carmody (Dublin); John (Moyvane);
Brendan (Sallowglen, Tarbert); Peter (Ennis); Dr Patrick Carmody (Killaloe);
Maurice (Navan); Finbar (Tarmons, Tarbert); Noel (London) and Martin
(Monalee, Co Limerick); three daughters, Mrs Eileen OConnell
(Tarbert); Mrs Sheila Flanagan (Moate, Co Westmeath) and Sr Mary Carmody
(Carlow); sonsinlaw, daughtersinlaw; sister,
Mrs Kitty OConnor, Ballyduff; 38 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren
and two greatgreat grandchildren, numerous relatives, friends
and neighbours to whom sympathy of the community is extended. |
