People came from many parts outside of Tarbert to remember their dead. Fr Brick paid tribute to the cemetery committee for the work they had put in cleaning the cemetery. He also thanked Patsy O’Connell and his brothers and sisters in London, USA and Tarbert, who donated the marble altar for the cemetery. After the Mass Fr Brick blessed all the graves in the cemetery.

DEV ASSOC DRAW: The Tarbert Development Association wishes to thank the people for their support towards the “Shrub, Flower and Plant” draw. A huge crowd made their way to the Anchor Bar on Friday night, August 9 to witness the proceedings and have a bit of craic. Johnny Mulvihill was the chief organiser, O Keenaghan was MC on the night and D Dee rounded up any spare tickets. A sum of €1,800 was contributed towards this worthy project. The monies raised will be used to build / maintain flower beds in the village. A special thank you to the ladies group who prepared and served up the food for the night. Great credit is due to all the ticket sellers for their efforts in making this fundraiser such a success.

LONDON DEATH: It was sad regret the news was received of the death in London of Mrs Mary Harris (nee Kissane), late of Dooncaha, Tarbert. A member of a widely connected local family, Mary was a kind and gentle lady and was held in deep affection by her relations and many friends. In her mid 80s, she was a staunch and popular member of the London / Tarbert Association for many years and was an Honorary President of the Association. Mary emigrated to London in 1936 and down through the years never lost her love for her native Tarbert and while she was able, came back every year on holidays. Huge numbers of Tarbert people from the London area attended her funeral including Seán and Mary Stack of Dooncaha, who travelled to London for the funeral. She was predeceased by her husband, John and is survived by her son Denis, daughter Patricia, numerous relatives and friends to whom sympathy of the community is extended.

SYMPATHY . . . of the community is extended to Mrs Noreen Boland, Doonard Crescent, Tarbert on the death of her brother Mr Johnny Granville, Feohanagh, Dingle and late of Paris, which took place at the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee on Friday. A big number of Tarbert people attended at the removal of the remains and at the burial on Sunday in Cillmaolcéadar cemetery.

COUNTY LEAGUE: Our senior team’s unlucky run in their county league games continued at Shannon Park on Saturday evening when the team lost to league leaders Duagh by a single point with a score of 2-6 to 0-11. Tarbert who led right up to the last five minutes of the game missed several good scoring chances. The loss of John O’Connell midway through the first half with a knee injury was a big blow as John was having a good game. Others to play well for Tarbert were Kevin Wrenn, Shane Langan, Darragh Lanigan, Stevie Deenihan and Eoin O’Connell.

Lixnaw GAA U-15 NK League — Lixnaw 2-13, Crotta 2-2. County Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Final — Lixnaw 1-18, Causeway 3-6. County Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter-Final Replay — Lixnaw 1-8, Dr Crokes 0-9. U-14 North Kerry B League Final Replay — Lixnaw 3-8, Causeway 1-2.

FIXTURES: County Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-Final — Lixnaw v Kilgarvan this Wednesday evening at 7pm. Venue yet to be decided. U-15 NK League Final — Lixnaw v Ballyheigue in Abbeydorney on this Friday evening at 6.30. It was a hugely successful and enjoyable week for the hurling club. The Juniors defeated Crokes to reach the county semi-final, the seniors did likewise when they defeated Causeway and the u-14s captured the NK B League when they beat Causeway also.

JUNIORS: In dreadful conditions in Abbeydorney, Lixnaw had two points to spare, 1-8 to 0-9, over Dr Crokes in the county Intermediate championship quarter-final replay. Mark Ryall made a welcome return to action, opening Lixnaw’s account with a point from a free. Chris Allen added an excellent point as did Mitchel McAuliffe, Tony McCarthy, JP O'Connell and Mark Ryall again as Lixnaw lead 0-6 to 0-2 at half time, having played with the advantage of the elements. A well taken Pat Corridan goal mid-way into the second half saw Lixnaw extend their advantage 1-8 to 0-5. However, this turned out to be their last score with Crokes controlling proceedings for the remainder of the match. They added four points to leave two points between the teams, 1-8 to 0-9 with time almost up. As we entered injury time, Crokes were awarded a twenty-one yard free, from which they went for that winning goal. The free was hit low and hard but was saved on the line. From a crowded goalmouth Tony McCarthy appeared with the sliothar and as he was clearing to safety, the referee blew time up. Lixnaw now play Kilgarvan in the semi-final on this Wednesday evening with the venue yet to be decided but more than likely to be played at a Killarney venue. Team: Shane Kelliher, Mossie Kelliher, Brendan McElligott, Declan McCarthy, Patrick Corridan (1-0), Tom Brosnan, Maurice Corridan, Chris Allen (0-1), Tony McCarthy (0-1), Patrick Hogan, JP O'Connell (0-1), PJ Stack, Mark Ryall (0-3), Oliver Sheehy (0-1), Mitchel McAuliffe (0-1). Subs: Eamon McElligott, Eamon Dennehy, Pat McKenna, Eoin Stack.

SENIORS: The seniors advanced to the semi-final of the county senior championship following their a 1-18 to 3-6 win over Causeway. Lixnaw had to endure some anxious moments before eventually killing off their opponents and were worthy winners in the end. Pat O'Connell and Kieran Dowling had early points for Lixnaw before Causeway struck for a goal from a penalty. Michael Conway restored our confidence with a brace of points, both from way out under the stand. Aidan Cronin followed with a fine point from a difficult angle before Trevor McKenna fired over his first point. Lixnaw were now in front again (0-6 to 1-1) looking like they had settled down when disaster number two struck. A free which landed on the edge of the Lixnaw square seemed to be in Lixnaw’s possession but somehow, was lost and the sliothar finished up in the Lixnaw net again. Causeway followed up with two points and were looking good. However, John Maher replied twice for Lixnaw with great points and Trevor McKenna brought the first half to a close when he fired over under pressure. Causeway were 2-4 to 0-9 ahead but were after playing with a strong breeze. Lixnaw opened the second half brightly and the brilliant Michael Conway had two points in succession. Causeway were not giving way and rattled the Lixnaw net again to go back in front. The next few minutes decided the outcome of the issue when Causeway were reduced to fourteen men after a foul on Paul Galvin. Furthermore, Lixnaw introduced Roibeard Thornton. Roibeard quickly rose two white flags before delivering the threatened killer blow when he planted the sliothar in the Causeway net for a capital goal. Lixnaw were now rampant and Kieran Dowling closed the scoring with a point on full time. For Lixnaw Paul Galvin stood head and shoulders above the rest. Pat O'Connell, Pat Corridan, Michael Conway and Roibeard Thornton when brought on, all were outstanding and kept Lixnaw in the game when the pressure was on. The remainder certainly gave of their all and had their moments at different stages. The game was well refereed by John Hennessey. Team: Eoin Thornton, Patrick Dowling, Colm Lyons, Pat Corridan, Pat O'Connell (0-1), Maurice McCarthy, Paul Galvin, TJ Maher, Aidan Cronin (0-2), John Maher (0-2), Kieran Dowling (0-2), Michael Conway (0-7), John Griffin, Trevor McKenna (0-2), Cillian Fitzmaurice. Subs: Roibeard Thornton (1-2), Chris Allen, Tony McCarthy, Tom Brosnan, Dick McElligott, Timmy Mahony, Paudie Lyons, Fergus Fitzmaurice, Michael Cronin. Fergus Fitzmaurice was unlucky to be unavailable because if injury he received in training. We wish him a speedy recovery. Also unavailable was Michael Cronin because of forthcoming football duties with the Kerry minors. This coming Sunday they play Meath in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park where we wish him well.

U-14: The u-14s made no mistake this time in the replay of the NK B league final when they easily beat Causeway 3-8 to 1-2. The underage training programme which was held over the winter certainly paid dividends. This win was much easier than expected following their thrilling drawn game. Lixnaw dominated the opening half and after twenty minutes the deadly James Flaherty had Lixnaw 1-4 to 0-0 ahead. Noel O'Sullivan added a goal to give Lixnaw a comfortable half time lead. Lixnaw kept the pressure on and James Flaherty had a point from a free after he had been fouled himself. Shortly after Robert Wallace added another goal which finally killed off the game as a contest. Causeway battled away though and were rewarded with 1-2 before Paudie Galvin finished off the game with a point for Lixnaw. Martin Stackpoole was safe and sound in goals. Kevin O'Connell and David Kissane were brilliant in the full-back line. Sean O'Keeffe, captain Emma McCarthy and Liam Og Maguire were a formidable half line who cleared their lines time and time again. Both Keith Boyd and Paudie Galvin, who were masters in the middle of the field are getting better and better with every game. In the half-forward line James Flaherty was a leading light. Causeway had no answer to his darting, skilful runs through their defence and his clinical finishing was extremely noteworthy. He got great support from Alan Bonn in the centre, who only began hurling recently and Robert Wallace on the other side. Noel O'Sullivan and Paudie O'Keeffe were always a threat on the edge of the square were a bit unlucky not to have notched another goal or two. Popular captain, Emma McCarthy received the NK league trophy from Gerard Doyle on behalf of the NK board. A unique achievement for a lady to captain a winning Lixnaw team, she played a captain’s part into the bargain. Well done Emma. It was a particularly satisfying performance for team Trainer Dick McElligott, his selectors Steven O'Mahony and Con O'Keeffe. A lot of work and effort has gone into developing this squad and remember they also reached the semi-final of the u-14 county Feile. Commiseration's to Causeway. In fairness they were minus a couple of their regular team players but they are too good not to be back again. Team: Martin Stackpoole, Kevin O'Connell, David Kissane, Sean O'Keeffe, Emma McCarthy, Liam Og Maguire, Paudie Galvin, Keith Boyd, Robert Wallace, Alan Bonn, James Flaherty, Paudie O'Keeffe, Noel O'Sullivan. Subs: Michael O'Sullivan Niall Quilter, Dominic Kissane, Cathal McCarthy, John Molyneaux, Gearoid Walshe, James McCarthy, Kevin McCarthy, Barry Maguire, Brendan Brosnan, Tomas O'Keeffe, Mary O'Keeffe, Dominic Kissane, Gary Kelliher.

U-15: Easily beat Crotta in the NK league. This was a one sided affair in which Lixnaw weren't really troubled. They now play Ballyheigue in the Final on this Friday evening in Abbeydorney. Best of luck to them. Team: Martin Stackpoole, Kevin O'Connell, Sean O'Keeffe, Liam Og Maguire, Paudie Galvin, Johnny O'Connell, Keith Boyd, Kevin Power, Robert Wallace, James Flaherty, James Brosnan, David Corridan, Noel O'Sullivan. Subs: Kevin McCarthy, Michael O'Sullivan, Alan Bonn, David Kissane, John Molyneaux.
