Tarbert Notes - Week Ending 18th July

PEOPLE at home and abroad were saddened to learn of the death of Mr Johnny Kissane, St Patrick¹s Terrace, Tarbert which took place at Listowel District Hospital on July 9 after an illness borne with courage and dignity the past few months. During his illness he had the loving care and support of his wife, Lila and family in his own home, before being hospitalised five weeks ago. Johnny was an esteemed member of a popular and widely connected local family and one of Tarbert¹s best loved parishioners with an unquenchable sense of humour and many talents. All his life he was an early riser, his garden was his pride and joy, there was none better in the saving of the turf and he always had a great love for Irish music and dance. He loved nature and every year in the spring-time he was always on the lookout for the arrival of the first swallow and the cuckoo. Johnny was a man of great faith and after the Sunday Mass enjoyed a visit to the old homestead in Tarmons and loved to listen to a football or hurling game on his radio. The deceased, who was 79 years in June, will be sadly missed by his wife and family, by his neighbours in St Patrick¹s Terrace and Tarmons and by his many friends. There was a huge attendance at the removal of the remains, shouldered by family members from St Mary¹s Funeral Home, Tarbert to St Mary¹s Church. The remains were received at the church by Very Rev Mossy Brick PP, Tarbert, Very Rev. Michael Fleming, Moyvane and Fr Tim Buckley. The chief concelebrant at the funeral Mass on Thursday was Very Rev Mossy Brick PP, the other celebrants were Very Rev. Philip O¹Connell PP, Ballylongford, Fr Tim Buckley, Nigeria and Tarmons and Fr Tommy O¹Hanlon. At the Mass family members participated in the readings, prayers of the faithful and the taking up of the gifts in the Offertory procession. The burial took place in Kilnaughtin cemetery. After the burial Denis Dee, son-in-law of the deceased paid tribute to Johnny and thanked Fr Brick and everyone for their support. In a final tribute at the graveside John Dowling sang ³The Old Man² and that brought tears to many. Johnny was pre-deceased by his sons, Joseph and Michael and is survived by his wife, Lila, sons, Tim and John, both of Tarbert, daughters, Mrs Uem, Dee, Tarbert, Mrs Margaret O¹Connor, Moyvane, Mrs Elizabeth Haskett, Newcastle West, sister, Mrs Bridie O¹Connell, Dooncaha, Tarbert, daughter-in-law, Christine, sons-in-law, Denis Dee, Tom O¹Connor, Cecil Haskett, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren, relatives and friends to whom sympathy of the community is extended .
